Where to find it

Before you write in

These four cover most of what people run into, and you may be able to fix it in a minute rather than waiting on a reply.

The app says my session expired

Audiobookshelf sign-ins made with a username and password last about an hour and are refreshed automatically. If the app hasn't been opened for a long time, or your server was unreachable, that refresh can lapse and you'll need to sign in again in Settings → Audiobookshelf Server.

If it keeps happening, use an API token instead — they don't expire. Create one in Audiobookshelf under Settings → Users → API Keys. See API tokens and sessions.

My library is empty

Pull down to refresh first. If it stays empty, sign in to Audiobookshelf's web interface as the same user and confirm that account can see the library — permissions are set per user, and an account with no access to a library sees nothing in the app either.

I'm not getting new episode notifications

Check that notifications are permitted for Castaway Media in iOS Settings and that Background App Refresh is on. iOS decides when background checks actually run, so they aren't on a fixed schedule and may be delayed on a low battery. An expired Audiobookshelf session also stops them.

Music won't connect

Plex sign-ins expire independently of Audiobookshelf. Re-authenticate in Settings → Plex. If your server appears but no library is offered, confirm the server has a library of type music — the app can only read that type.

Reporting a problem

If you email, these details make it much easier to help:

  • What you did, what you expected, and what happened instead
  • Which section — podcasts, audiobooks, ebooks or music
  • Your iOS version and device
  • Your Audiobookshelf or Plex server version
  • The exact wording of any error, or a screenshot

Please don't send server addresses, passwords or API tokens. They're never needed to diagnose a problem, and you shouldn't share them with anyone.

Requesting a feature

Suggestions are welcome at the same address. It helps to describe the problem you're trying to solve rather than the solution you have in mind — there's often a simpler route to the same place.
